Choose your AI setup

Compare BYOK, a local model and Meoz Pro, including their privacy boundaries.

Choose who processes your AI requests and how much setup you want to manage. Local storage and local AI processing are different things.

Bring your own key

For Meoz 1.1.333 on macOS. BYOK is available without Meoz Pro. You need a key from the provider you select and any credit or access that provider requires.

  • Open Settings → General & AI → AI Provider.
  • Choose your provider in Provider, then paste its key into the API key field.
  • Click Save API Key and check that Saved appears. Closing Settings with an unsaved draft does not save the key.
  • For OpenRouter, choose from the Model options shown. This version does not offer a general custom-model or base-URL field for every provider.
  • Start a focus session with a goal, open an ordinary webpage and check Guardian's displayed status. Saved confirms storage, not that the provider accepted a request. There is no separate Test Connection button in this panel.

If Meoz reports no API key, check the currently selected provider and save its key; keys are separate for each provider. If a request fails after saving, follow the displayed error: verify your provider's access, credit and network connection. Browser permission errors require the separate Privacy & Permissions controls. Do not share your key with support.

AI requests go directly from Meoz to your selected provider. You manage provider charges. That provider's privacy and retention terms apply; BYOK does not automatically mean zero retention.

Follow the BYOK setup guide to configure your provider.

Use a compatible local model

For Meoz 1.1.333 on macOS. Local AI does not require Meoz Pro, but you must install and run a compatible service on your Mac. This version's Local provider expects the llama3.1 model through an OpenAI-compatible service on localhost, port 11434, using the /v1/chat/completions path. These are the connection requirements for this version, not arbitrary settings you can change in the app.

  • Install Ollama and download the llama3.1 model using Ollama's own instructions. Keep its local service running.
  • Open Settings → General & AI → AI Provider and choose Local (OpenAI-compatible).
  • The current app still requires a nonempty API key field for Local. For an unauthenticated local Ollama service, enter the placeholder ollama and click Save API Key. This placeholder is not a cloud credential.
  • Start a focus session with a goal and a readable webpage, then check Guardian's status. A running timer or Saved label alone does not confirm successful inference.

If the service cannot be reached, check that Ollama is running on the expected port. If the model is missing, download llama3.1 before retrying. A server configured with another port or model is not automatically compatible with this version. There is no general endpoint/model editor in this Settings panel; ask support before following instructions for another local server. Hardware capacity and model quality affect speed and results; this guide does not promise a tested minimum RAM size.

This describes AI inference, not a promise that every app function works offline. Downloads, updates, licensing or other connected features can still need the network.

If setup still fails, contact support with your Meoz version and exact error. Do not share credentials.

Use Meoz Pro

For Meoz 1.1.333 on macOS. You need an eligible Pro purchase, trial or grant and a network connection; installing Meoz alone does not activate Pro.

  • Open Settings and select the account card in the sidebar to open Meoz Pro & Account.
  • Select Email Code, enter the email associated with your entitlement and choose Send Code.
  • Enter the six-digit Sign-in Code from the email and choose Verify & Activate.
  • Alternatively, select License Key, paste your purchase license key and choose Activate.
  • After successful activation, check the Pro status and Settings → General & AI → Provider. Activation selects Meoz Pro; you can switch providers later.

If no eligible account is found, check the purchase email rather than repeatedly requesting codes. For an expired or incorrect code, request a fresh code when Resend Code becomes available. For a device-limit error, use device management to free an unused Mac's slot, then retry activation. If Pro needs renewal, refresh or renew it using the account controls. A temporary connection failure alone does not prove your subscription expired. Never send support your code or license key.

Pro provides managed AI through the Meoz gateway. Relevant request context is processed in the cloud. The configured AI route requires Zero Data Retention (ZDR); this is not a claim that account, billing or service-operation data never exists.

Read the Privacy Policy for the processing chain, data categories and retention details. Read current plans and offers for pricing and trial terms.

What stays local

Tasks, notes, settings and focus history use files in your workspace and linked vaults. The default workspace can be in iCloud Drive when available; files there may sync through Apple. A folder managed by another sync service may also be uploaded by that service. Check Settings → Workspace & Hub to see the actual location, rather than assuming every file stays only on this Mac.

Plain Markdown notes are readable files; they are not encrypted by Meoz. Encrypted journal vaults are a separate choice, not encryption for the whole workspace. Understand notes and storage.

Using cloud AI can send the goal and other context needed for the selected operation. Local file storage, encrypted journal storage and AI-provider retention are separate privacy choices.

For setup or activation problems, use the recovery guide.
